The Problem
Everyday objects are often overlooked and underappreciated.
There's an opportunity to transform these functional items into something that not only serves its purpose but also tells a story and sparks joy.
The Opportunity
How might I transform a mundane object into something with a story — something that sparks joy and laughter?
Discovery
Early Iterations
At the beginning of the quarter, I explored various ideas for pen docks, each with its own unique story and personality. My goal was to create a product that went beyond mere functionality, offering something that could make people smile.
Key Insight
Shapes are their own language, and they can tell a story. I love telling stories with everything I create, and doing so can help you stand out.
Define
Choosing and Refining a Design
Jerry, with his crab-inspired design, emerged as the standout concept among my ideas. I made a second iteration of his form in blue foam to better define the shape that sparked the most joy.
Develop
3D Modeling
I soon moved on to digital modeling using Rhino 3D. Leveraging the Background Bitmap feature, I accurately translated my foam models into 3D-printing files, refining Jerry's shape to achieve the cute and charming aesthetic I envisioned.
For the first iteration, I designed Jerry as a shell composed of two halves connected by a tongue-and-groove mechanism, ensuring both efficiency in printing and ease of assembly. Before committing to finishing materials, I used Keyshot to render different color schemes and materials, helping me identify the look that felt most like "Jerry."

Package Design
I taught myself Illustrator in order to add as much professionalism as possible. I added tons of Easter eggs for my family and really let my personality shine through the packaging.
Insights
The Power of Story
Completing this project from start to finish provided invaluable experience in rapid prototyping. I learned that the most successful designs are often the ones that may seem whimsical or silly at first but have the power to make people smile. Jerry embodies this principle, and the joy he brings to those who see him is a testament to the importance of fun and personality in product design. This project reinforced my belief that functionality and storytelling can coexist, and it has inspired me to continue creating products that are both useful and joyful.
